IOSH Working Safely
IOSH Working Safely is a short course that covers all the essential elements of health and safety in the workplace, including manual handling, working at height, managing stress, correct use of display screen equipment and much more.
The course is ideal as part of an induction package for new employees, and also as a foundation for employees who will go on to attend specialised, in-depth courses relevant to their role, for example, Display Screen Equipment Training or Working at Height Training.
IOSH Working Safely ensures employees understand their responsibilities for health and safety in the workplace, and that they know how to identify hazards and manage risks to protect themselves, their colleagues, and your organisation.
IOSH Working Safely passport offers the same Working Safely course, but on successful completion of the IOSH Working Safely course a passport can be issued along with the certificate. The passport displays photo ID and the certificate number.

1. Introducing working safely
How an employee’s actions in the workplace contribute to safety and health, including legal and moral responsibilities.
2. Defining hazard and risk
Recognising hazards and hazard groups.
Understanding how the risk assessment process works, and how inspections identify risk controls that are working and those that require improvement.
3. Physical & verbal abuse, bullying & harassment
Identifying bullying, harassment, and workplace violence by looking at examples.
Recognising the symptoms, signs and clues that abuse is taking place. Understanding what action to take when abuse is suspected and following an incident.
4. Asbestos Awareness
Looking at what asbestos is, where it is found and the health effects.
How to reduce the risk of asbestos exposure, and what to do in an emergency.
5. Terrorist threat
Identifying different types of threat and understanding evacuation, invacuation and violent threat procedures.
6. Chemicals and hazardous substances
Recognising different types of hazardous substances, including biological hazards and UV light.
Understanding the risks of different hazardous substances and how to reduce risks and report problems.
7. Display screen equipment
Looking at health issues caused by the incorrect use of display screen equipment.
How to adjust chair, screen, and work environment and how to use laptops and other mobile devices safely.
8. Confined spaces and enclosed spaces
Understanding the biological, physical, and atmospheric hazards associated with confined and enclosed spaces.
Recognising what to do to eliminate or reduce risks.
9. Drug and alcohol awareness
Recognising the dangers and signs of drug and alcohol misuse. Knowing how to reduce risks and where to find help.
Looking at an example of an employer’s drug and alcohol policy.
10. Electricity
Identifying electrical hazards and the effect of electric shock on the human body.
Considering the electric shock risk when evacuating, and how to avoid electric shocks.
11. Fire and emergencies
Understanding the fire triangle and the causes of fire.
What to do on discovering a fire, and what action to take when the fire alarm sounds.
12. Getting in and out
Recognising the dangers of getting in and out of buildings and how to minimise risks by separating vehicles and pedestrians and controlling access, for example.
13. Working at height
Recognising high risk working at height tasks and selecting the right equipment for a job.
Knowing how to use different types of ladders and mobile elevated platforms correctly.
14. Housekeeping and storage
Understanding how poor housekeeping compromises health and safety.
How to identify hazards and reduce risks including fire risks and slips, trips and falls.

Looking at the hazards caused by too much and too little light in the workplace and what to do.
16. Manual Handling
Identifying high risk tasks and recognising when manual handling can be avoided.
How to lift and move loads safely, what equipment can be used and what other measures can be taken to reduce safety risks.
17. Noise and vibration awareness
Understanding the effects of noise and vibrations on the human body.
How to minimise the risks of noise and vibrations and recognise symptoms of health issues.
18. Personal hygiene
Practical ways to ensure personal hygiene when working indoors, outdoors and in different workplace environments.
19. Work equipment
Understanding work equipment regulations and an employer’s and employee’s safety responsibilities.
Recognising the dangers of different types of work equipment and how to mitigate the risks by following safe systems of work and ensuring regular maintenance and repair.
20. Slips, trips and falls
Identifying the causes of slips, trips and falls in the workplace. How to reduce the risks through safe behaviour and working practices, considering factors like obstacles, footwear, cleaning, flooring, and contamination.
21. Health and stress awareness
How stress effects the human body. How to recognise and manage pressure and stress and where to find help.
22. Temperature
Understanding the law and ‘reasonable’ temperature in the workplace. The effects of extremes of temperature on the human body, and how employers and employees can reduce health risks at work.
23. Driving whilst working
How to reduce safety risks when driving at work.
This module covers driver fatigue, using mobile devices, how to check a vehicle is roadworthy before setting off and the importance of planning a journey.
24. Welfare facilities
Recognising what welfare facilities employees should have access to, whether they are working in a building, on-site or in the field.
25. Vehicles and transport
Identifying the hazards and dangers of working in or near vehicles and other transport, particularly when reversing, manoeuvring, parking, and unloading.
What steps to take to reduce the risks to pedestrians, drivers, and workers.
26. Improving safety performance
This module is about how employees can improve an organisation’s safety performance. It covers identifying and reporting accidents, incidents and near-misses; safe behaviours; understanding first aid and emergency procedures; the importance of using personal protective equipment (PPE) provided, and much more.
