Are directors responsible for health and safety?
Business owners and employers have ultimate responsibility for health and safety under the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.
However, the business owner/employer can delegate certain duties to a competent person with relevant health and safety skills, knowledge and experience. When they delegate duties, they still retain accountability so they must properly assess the third party’s competency.
What health and safety training should directors have?
By law organisations must have arrangements in place to manage health and safety. The HSE’s guidance Managing for Health and Safety explains the duties of leaders, owners, trustees, and line managers.

Does IOSH Safety for Executives and Directors expire?
No, the IOSH Safety for Executives and Directors Certificate doesn’t expire. However, it is advisable to refresh training every 3 years to ensure knowledge is fresh and reflects current standards and legislation.
Who is responsible for health and safety training in the workplace?
Under Section 2 of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 the employer is responsible for providing ‘information, instruction, training and supervision, as far as is reasonably practicable’ to ensure the health and safety of employees at work.

1. The moral, legal and financial case
Exploring the moral imperatives guiding health and safety practices and the legal responsibilities of executives and directors.
Looking at the financial ramifications of inadequate health and safety management through case studies.
2. Plan
How to develop a strategic health and safety plan aligned with the organisation’s goals and objectives. This includes identifying workplace hazards, assessing risks, establishing clear policies and procedures, implementing effective communication channels, and setting measurable objectives for health and safety improvement.
3. Do
Focusing on the implementation phase.
How to allocate resources and responsibilities for health and safety, provide adequate training and competency development for employees, ensure compliance with regulations, establish emergency response procedures, and implement effective control measures to mitigate risk.
