Manual Handling FAQs
Can you do Manual Handling without training?
Employees must not lift or move heavy loads without appropriate training.
Employers must provide proper health and safety training for employees under Section 2 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and regulations 10 and 13 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations. Manual handling training helps to reduce risks as specified under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992.
Who should carry out a manual handling risk assessment?
Employers can carry out a manual handling risk assessment themselves or assign a ‘competent’ person to do so on their behalf.
How long is a manual handling course online?
Our online manual handling course takes just 25 – 30 minutes to complete.
How long does manual handling training last?
The law does not set timeframe for refreshing manual handling training. However, it is important that knowledge and skills stay fresh in an employee’s mind to keep them safe. It is advisable to re-take manual handling training at least every 2 years, depending on the level of risk.
Can manual handling training be done online?
Yes, our online Manual Handling Course is based on the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (MHOR) helping to ensure employees can identify and mitigate health and safety risks to keep themselves and others safe.
Further training may be needed to ensure employees use mechanical aids correctly and understand an organisation’s safe systems of work and risk assessment.
What is the maximum distance for pushing a load?
There is no limit to the distance a load can be pushed if the person pushing the load takes enough breaks to recover. However, if a load needs to be pushed for more than 20 metres it is advisable to undertake a more detailed assessment of the risk.

Course aims
Manual handling accounts for 17% of workplace injuries and contributes to slips, trips and falls which make up over a third of reported accidents at work. It is therefore crucial that employees understand how to reduce the risks of manual handling for their own safety and the efficiency of your organisation.

1. Introduction
What an employer’s and employee’s duties are under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (MHOR).
2. Defining the problem
What manual handling is. How many injuries occur as a result of manual handling. What the most common injuries are. How to identify high-risk tasks and activities.
3. Avoiding
How to recognise when manual handling can be avoided and when the process can be automated. What practical steps can be taken to reduce the risk of injury.
4. Assessing
How to assess a manual handling task before starting. Who to involve in a manual handling assessment and when to seek specialist advice. What records must be kept.
5. Reducing the risk
How to reduce a risk ‘as far as is reasonably practicable’ with practical information about safely handling loads.
How to apply practical manual handling techniques and plan ahead.
Assessment
At the end of the online manual handling training course there are 10 multiple choice questions to answer, and the pass mark is 80%.
Certificate
If you complete the course on SHINE, you will receive a certificate which is downloadable as a PDF file.

How is it delivered?
The online manual handling course is delivered online or through a computer network to each trainee at their desktop, laptop or mobile device.
