Ladder inspection checklist

A hand holding a pen ticking boxes on a blank checklist.

Adam Clarke

Here is a ladder inspection checklist to help you make sure your ladder is safe. This is a list of the components of a ladder that must be inspected.

If a ladder is found to be unsafe it should be clearly marked as unsafe and securely locked away.

To find out what the law says about ladder use at work, please see Your essential guide to UK ladder regulations.

Ladder inspection checklist

Braces

Ensure that all braces and supports are securely attached and free from damage or defects.

Feet

Check that the ladder feet are in good condition, free from damage or wear, and have non-slip pads intact to prevent slippage.

Fixings

Inspect all fixings, bolts, and screws to ensure they are tight and secure.

Guide brackets

For extension ladders, ensure guide brackets are in place and functioning correctly to prevent the ladder from sliding out of position.

Labels

Confirm that safety labels and markings, including load ratings and warnings, are legible and not worn or faded.

Locking mechanism

If the ladder has a locking mechanism, ensure it is functional and engages properly to secure the ladder in the open position.

Platforms

If the ladder has platforms, verify that they are stable and free from damage or defects.

Restraint devices

If the ladder is equipped with restraint devices or safety harness attachment points, verify their condition and functionality.

Rungs

Check all ladder rungs for cracks, bends, or other signs of damage. Ensure they are securely attached to the stiles.

Rung hooks

If applicable, check that rung hooks are intact and properly engaged to secure any extension ladder sections.

Stepladder platform

If using a step ladder with a platform, ensure the platform is secure and free from damage.

Steps or treads

Check that all steps or treads are in good condition, with no cracks, bends, or other damage.

Stiles

Inspect the ladder stiles for bends, cracks, or other structural damage.

Ladder Safety Training

Developed by experienced health and safety consultants, our Ladder Safety Training course equips employees with essential knowledge for using ladders and stepladders safely and supports compliance with UK ladder regulations.

Participants learn how to recognise and mitigate the risks of working on a ladder to protect their own health and safety and that of others. This IOSH Approved, CPD certified course has been created by experienced health and safety professionals. It can be completed at the learner’s own pace and no previous experience is required.
