    By the end of ladder safety training, employees will be able to:

    • Recognise the different types of ladders and the associated hazards.
    • Understand the types of falls that may occur and how to prevent falls.
    • Understand how to carry out ladder and stepladder pre-use checks and why it is essential.
    • Know how to use a ladder and stepladder correctly.
    • Know how to store and maintain a ladder and stepladder.

    Course Overview

    1. Using ladders

    Why ladder safety is important with reference to accident statistics. HSE guidance on when it is safe/unsafe to use a ladder.

    2. Types of falls

    Different types of ladders, and the 6 main types of falls from ladders and how to prevent them.

    3. British standards

    How to ensure ladders conform to British Standards when purchasing or hiring. How to check that a ladder meets British Standards.

    4. Storage and maintenance

    How to store and maintain ladders correctly and why it is important.

    5. Correct use of ladders

    Why it is important to comply with manufacturer’s instructions when using and maintaining ladders.

    This part of the course covers footing, pre-use checks, lashing, overreaching, 3 points of contact, setup, positioning, stepping off a ladder, overhead power cables, extending past a landing place, extending overlaps, safe footwear and other key considerations.

    6. Pre-use checks for stepladders

    Step-by-step guide to checking stepladders for defects, stability issues and other hazards before use.

    7. Using stepladders

    Clear safety points to follow when using a stepladder, including safe positioning, the importance of using a tool belt or bag, never overreaching and more.

    Assessment

    At the end of the online ladder safety training course there are 10 multiple choice questions to answer, and the pass mark is 80%.

    Certificate

    If you complete the course on SHINE, you will receive a certificate which is downloadable as a PDF file.

    How is it delivered?

    The ladder safety training course is delivered online or through a computer network to each trainee at their desktop, laptop or mobile device.

    We can also provide the course to be integrated into a SCORM compliant LMS.

    Ladder training can be completed at the employee’s own pace by “bookmarking” and recording progress and returning to the training later.
