Case Studies

Introduction

Praxis42 was appointed by a national telecommunications company to conduct an ergonomic assessment and devise risk assessment method statements (RAMS) to protect a warehouse employee who was suffering from musculoskeletal injuries following a car accident and a fall.

Client need

The injured employee’s role involved loading pallets and moving them on and off racks in the client’s warehouse. A review was needed to identify the different ways in which the employee moved when carrying out tasks, which tasks they could perform safely and which they could not. Then a set of controls needed to be created to mitigate the manual handling risks.

Solution

Our consultants:

  • Carried out an on-site ergonomic assessment with the employee and their line manager to assess work tasks and discuss the medical risks.
  • Wrote an ergonomic review with recommendations detailing the controls necessary to mitigate the manual handling risks.
  • Devised safe systems of work for each of the employee’s five main work activities through risk assessment method statements (RAMS).
  • Conducted a management review to support the line manager to implement safe systems of work in consultation with the employee.
  • Carried out periodic reviews with the line manager to ensure measures continued to protect the employee effectively, considering any changes to medical needs, work activities or equipment.

As a result of this in-depth process, specialist equipment was provided by the employer to enable the employee to work safely. They were then able to carry out tasks more efficiently and their sickness absence rate reduced.

Choosing Praxis42 for your risk assessment method statements (RAMS)

Our consultants have assisted high profile organisations across the UK with risk assessment method statements (RAMS). We pride ourselves in ensuring our risk assessments are clear and jargon-free, so they are easy to understand and implement.

We tailor our approach to your specific requirements providing ongoing support and reviewing your risk assessments to ensure they are effective and reflect changing conditions.

Introduction

Praxis42 was contacted by a large national property management company to conduct workplace transport risk assessments for moving shipping containers to their storage depots across the UK.

Client need

The client required workplace transport risk assessments to be carried out due to site expansions, new training areas, manholes and resurfacing works.

Solution

To date Praxis42 has completed over 280 workplace transport risk assessments for the client, with a view to complete more.

Our consultants reviewed the client’s site plans, proposed operations, and anticipated vehicle access and movements. We assessed:

  • The potential risks associated with plant and vehicle movements, including collision risks, visibility issues and congestion.
  • Physical barriers and demarcation to ensure they were clearly visible and served their intended purposes.
  • The risks associated with entering exclusion zones and the measures in place to prevent unauthorised access.
  • Administrative and operational measures to ensure they were up-to-date and aligned with best practices.
  • Site design features such as signage and traffic calming measures to ensure these features enhanced safety and complied with regulations.
  • The safety of access points to and from containers and site structures, identifying any potential hazards.
  • Loading and unloading operations, including the movement of goods and materials and what procedures were in place to prevent accidents.
  • How adverse weather conditions may affect traffic management on site and what contingency plans and procedures were in place.

Following the assessment, we produced a recommended site layout and a report detailing necessary priority-based changes. We supported the client to implement changes and worked with them to continuously monitor the effectiveness of control measures.

Introduction

Hobbs previously had a long association with Praxis42, in which we helped them establish a robust fire, health and safety management system and safety culture.

When Hobbs was acquired by TFG London (including Phase Eight and Whistles), the Head of Property Estates and Facilities extended the system across the total group estate, having observed that it was a highly successful part of the Hobbs operation.

Client need

Following the acquisition, TFG London wanted to ensure that the whole group estate was consistent and compliant. The priority was to establish a safety management system that could work across all sites.

Solution

Led by senior management and managed through the HR and Property team, the safety management programme included:

  • Developing a business focused policy which set organisational responsibilities, annual objectives and plans.
  • Annual store compliance and assessment visits.
  • Audit of the logistics and supply process.
  • Office safety inspections.

The programme involved reviewing and integrating policies, procedures and organisational responsibilities that were becoming consistent across brands. The annual visit was adapted to match evolving business objectives and support managers to oversee their areas of responsibility.

The Praxis42 incident reporting software provided an online weekly store inspection which helped the Property Estates and Facilities team monitor performance and gave managers access to deal with actions from the annual visits.

Moving accident and incident reporting online improved the speed and ease of reporting so appropriate actions could be taken more swiftly.

Comment from Head of Property Estates and Facilities

“The consulting team at Praxis42 are extremely professional and competent in extending their knowledge of fire, health and safety within the TFG team and are always at the other end of the phone to offer pragmatic advice. The incident reporting software has given insights across the estate which helps the team focus on what’s important and provide oversight.”

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) employs approximately 230,000 regular and reserve personnel with a civilian staff of 55,000. Their training is managed by a department called DBLearning. When DBLearning carried out a review of its environment, health & safety eLearning materials it concluded that many modules needed updating to reflect current best practices and changing legislation.

Client need

Praxis42 was selected as the sole provider of DBLearning’s environment, health & safety eLearning due to our technical experience and professional credentials.

During the selection process the MoD were looking for assurance from eLearning suppliers that their content kept pace with the constant changes that occur in this area of compliance, and that they could provide a high standard of ongoing support.

Praxis42 stood out as first-class subject matter experts and as a provider of eLearning training courses accredited by the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH)

Delivery

To establish proof of concept and gain user feedback, Praxis42 undertook an initial pilot through DBLearning’s Limited Editions programme where all our health & safety eLearning modules were trialled. The pilot was successful and became the foundation for a long-term licence agreement.

The MoD say that working in partnership with Praxis42 means training modules are kept up to date and relevant to their requirements while providing an excellent interactive learning experience for their staff.

The response to our eLearning courses from senior management, line managers and students taking the courses has been extremely positive.

“The course was a tremendous success and, whilst the final assessments still need to be ratified by IOSH, I envisage that all of those who attended will achieve the full IOSH Managing Safely qualification.”

Captain Chris Butt

“Praxis42 listened to what we needed and have consistently delivered on time and on budget. They are extremely professional.”

Bernie Hart – DBLearning team manager

Introduction

McColl’s, a leading neighbourhood retailer, recognised the importance of assessing fire safety compliance across their estate. They had already established a computer-aided facility management (CAFM) system and sought a fire safety consultancy that would understand the importance of integrating with their newly implemented CAFM system.

Client need

McColl’s identified a requirement to outsource fire safety across their network of countrywide stores, to achieve compliance with Article 9 of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and Section 53(2)(a) of the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005.

Establishing a partnership with a credible consultancy business was important to McColl’s and a good cultural fit was one of the criteria for selecting Praxis42.

In addition to strategic guidance, McColl’s needed a fire safety consultancy that could deliver fire risk assessments across the UK, support the Health and Safety Manager and ensure compliance in a dynamic business environment.

McColl's fire safety in retail case study.

Solution

Praxis42 was initially appointed at a strategic level to provide guidance and support to ensure full compliance with fire safety legislation. Our team was quickly able to provide data directly into the McColl’s CAFM system via an Application Programming Interface (API).

We were delighted to also win the tender to undertake fire risk assessments across their 1,200 convenience stores. Competence was critical, and we were able to evidence our credentials as a BAFE SP205 Life Safety Risk Assessment accredited company.

Comment from the Health and Safety Manager, Alison Fagan:

“We like working with Praxis42 as they are large enough to manage the business requirement but are small enough to ensure that there is a personal relationship to assist with dynamic situations at speed to ensure that McColl’s needs are met.”
