Sexual Harassment FAQs
What is the first step if you are sexually harassed at work?
The first step is to tell the harasser to stop if you feel comfortable to do so. Keep a diary of their behaviour with times and dates as evidence.
At the same time, check your employer’s sexual harassment or harassment and bullying policy. The policy will tell you how to make a sexual harassment complaint and what will happen next.
How does HR handle harassment?
If you report sexual harassment to your HR department, they have a legal duty to take your complaint seriously. They must listen to you very carefully, document your complaint, and investigate your complaint in line with your organisation’s procedures.
They must keep you informed about the outcome of their investigation and explain the next steps to you.
What is the employer’s duty to prevent harassment?
Harassment is against the law under the Equality Act 2010.
The Worker Protection Act 2023 strengthens the Equality Act 2010 by stating that employers must take proactive steps to prevent sexual harassment at work.
