Lone Working Training
The Lone Working Training course raises awareness of the risks of working alone and the practical steps employers and employees can take to protect personal safety.
Lone workers are those who work by themselves at a fixed base or at different premises. They may work outside normal working hours, drive for a living, or work alone with the public. They are more vulnerable and at greater risk of violence and aggression, so providing supervision, education, training, and control measures is essential.
This course focuses on the common hazards and risks associated with lone working, employer’s and employee’s legal responsibilities, and effective ways to control the risks to lone workers.

Lone Working FAQs
Is it a legal requirement for staff to have a lone working assessment?
Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, all health and safety risks to employees must be assessed, and that includes lone working risks.
Why is training required for lone workers?
Lone workers do not have supervisors or colleagues with them, so they are more vulnerable. It is difficult for them to get help in an emergency.
Lone working training helps to ensure employees know how to minimise risks to their personal safety and what to do if their safety is threatened.
What are the hazards of lone working?
Lone workers are more at risk of violence from members of the public. It is also difficult for them to get help in the event of an incident, accident or illness.
Can you work a night shift alone?
Yes, but an employer must carefully assess and mitigate the risks to protect an employee’s health and safety.
How often should a lone worker check in?
How often a lone worker should check in depends on the level of risk to their personal safety. Check-ins could be every 30 minutes, for example, or every 2 or 3 hours.
Can I refuse to work if I feel unsafe?
Section 44 of the Employment Rights Act 1996 gives workers the right to contest the adequacy and suitability of safety arrangements and to take steps to protect themselves from danger without fear of losing their job or other recriminations.
Is working from home considered lone working?
Yes. Any employee who is working away from colleagues is considered a lone worker.
Do I need a lone worker policy?
A lone worker policy is not a legal requirement, but it helps ensure that an employer fulfils their duty of care towards employees, and it supports compliance.
