IOSH Managing Safely
The IOSH Managing Safely course is the industry standard for health and safety management training for business owners, managers, supervisors, and team leaders across all industries.
The course inspires learners to build a positive health and safety culture in their organisation and implement effective safe systems of work. It covers all aspects of health and safety requirements including a manager’s responsibilities, how to identify and manage workplace risks and conduct incident investigations.

Benefits of IOSH Managing Safely
IOSH Managing Safely online ensures a robust understanding of health and safety best practices and legislation.
Participants explore practical strategies that can be employed in day-to-day management to improve safety performance and reduce workplace injuries and sick days.
IOSH Managing Safely is an internationally recognised qualification from the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).
Who should take this course?
IOSH Managing Safely elearning is designed for managers and supervisors who need to manage safety in compliance with their organisation’s policy, best practices and health and safety legislation. It is also aimed at people new to health and safety as part of a management training programme.
For employees at all levels in an organisation we offer IOSH Working Safely (both a Passport and Certificate option). This is a foundation course which provides participants with essential knowledge of hazards in the workplace and how to manage risks effectively.
Managers and supervisors who take IOSH Managing Safely training do not also need to complete IOSH Working Safely.
Course duration
The IOSH Managing Safely course online takes approximately 24 hours to complete in the participant’s own time. Most people complete the course in less than 3 months.
Course delivery
IOSH Managing Safely training online is delivered as eLearning, through our virtual classroom or face-to-face at a location of your choice.
Course Aims
By the end of IOSH Managing Safely training participants will understand:
- How to report and investigate incidents.
- Their responsibilities for promoting health and safety in the workplace.
- The human, legal, and financial consequences of incidents for individuals and the organisation.
- How to build a positive health and safety culture through communication and cooperation.
- How to identify hazards, measure risks and conduct a risk assessment.
- How to control risks by identifying and implementing the right precautions.
- How to review safety systems, introduce new controls and implement changes to improve health and safety.
- How to measure the performance of health and safety in the workplace.
Course Overview
1. Introducing managing safely
- Human, legal, and financial reasons for promoting a safe working environment.
- The manager’s role and accountability for health and safety.
2. Assessing risks
- What constitutes a risk assessment and how to conduct an effective risk assessment.
- How to identify potential hazards, evaluate risks, and implement measures to control or mitigate risks.
3. Controlling risks
- Methods for assessing and managing risks. How to apply the hierarchy of risk control to eliminate or minimise risks.
- Looking at different control measures and strategies to reduce a range of workplace risks.
4. Understanding responsibilities
- Legal obligations and responsibilities related to health and safety management.
- The regulatory framework governing workplace safety and the key components of an effective health and safety management system.
5. Understanding hazards
- Types of hazards that can be present in a workplace, including physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic, or psychosocial factors.
- Methods for identifying, assessing, and managing hazards to prevent accidents and injuries.
6. Investigating incidents
- The importance of promptly reporting and investigating workplace incidents. How to report and investigate accidents.
- This module covers identification of the root causes of incidents and corrective actions that can be implemented to prevent recurrence.
7. Measuring performance
- How to evaluate and monitor the health and safety performance of an organisation to ensure safety standards are maintained.
- What key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure.
Assessment
At the end of the IOSH Managing Safely course there is a multiple-choice assessment to complete which consists of 30 questions. Participants must also submit a risk assessment of their workplace or a setting of their choice.
Certificate
On successful completion of the course participants will receive an IOSH Managing Safely Certificate.

With eLearning, participants can access course materials at their convenience, fitting around their commitments.
