IOSH Managing Safely is the industry standard for health and safety management training for business owners, managers, supervisors, and team leaders across all industries. The course covers all aspects of health and safety requirements including a manager’s responsibilities, how to identify and manage workplace risks, and conduct incident investigations.

You can study whenever and wherever suits you. IOSH online courses are delivered through our SHINE platform, or to your own learning management system via SCORM.
Virtual Classroom
Combine the benefits of face-to-face and online learning. Our experienced IOSH Approved trainers deliver training virtually. You also benefit from access to our online resources.
In-person
If you would like to deliver training to a group, an IOSH trainer can visit your workplace or another location that suits you.
eLearning

With eLearning, participants can access course materials at their convenience, fitting around their commitments.

- Tracking. Our learning management system, SHINE, enables administrators to track learners’ progress, the courses they have attended and the dates, which supports health and safety compliance.

Module 3 – Controlling risks
- Understand what is meant by ‘reasonably practicable’ when deciding on risk controls.

- Understand the concept of residual risk and why it matters.
Module 4 – Understanding responsibilities

Module 5 – Understanding hazards
- Learn about the six main hazard categories, and how hazards may span multiple types.
- Explore common workplace hazards, their symptoms and control measures, including:

Module 6 – Investigating incidents
- Understand the terms incident, accident and near miss.
- Learn why incident investigation is important and what it involves.
- Identify immediate, underlying and root causes of incidents.
- Follow a structured approach to reporting and investigating incidents.
- Recognise the actions required after an incident to prevent recurrence.
Module 7 – Measuring performance
- Understand how performance indicators help improve workplace safety.
- Differentiate between proactive and reactive indicators.
- Learn what makes a good KPI and how to use them effectively.
- Explore the role of auditing, including the difference between internal and external audits.
- Identify the types of evidence used in audits to assess performance.
To successfully complete the IOSH Managing Safely course, learners must complete an online exam and a practical risk assessment project. There are no extra fees — both the exam and project are included in the course cost.
Online Exam
- 30 multiple-choice questions aligned with the course topics.
- Completed online – no need to attend a training centre.
- 45-minute time limit, minimum 36/60 to pass.
- Two attempts allowed. If unsuccessful, the full course must be retaken.
Risk Assessment Project
- Complete a risk assessment of the workplace or another familiar setting.
- Demonstrate hazard identification, risk evaluation and control recommendation.
- Submitted online via email to IOSH-approved tutors for marking.
- Three-page template provided:
- Page 1: general details and scope.
- Page 2: completed risk assessment.
- Page 3: guidance notes.
- Drafts may be submitted for tutor feedback.
- Minimum 23/38 points required to pass.
Who should take this course?
IOSH Managing Safely elearning is designed for managers and supervisors who need to manage safety in compliance with their organisation’s policy, best practices and health and safety legislation. It is also ideal for those new to health and safety in a management context.
We also offer IOSH Working Safely for employees at all levels, which provides essential knowledge of workplace hazards and how to manage risks effectively.
Those who complete IOSH Managing Safely do not also need to take IOSH Working Safely.
Course duration
Learners have up to 190 days from enrolment to complete the course. Progress can be made at their own pace. After 190 days, access expires. Most complete the course in 24 hours over less than 3 months.
Certificate
Successful participants receive a digital Managing Safely certificate from IOSH.
Course Expiry
Unassigned courses expire 12 months from purchase. Once assigned, the course remains accessible for 190 days or until completion, whichever is sooner.

What support is available if I get stuck during the course?
All learners have access to support from our team throughout the course. For eLearning, this includes technical assistance and guidance on assessments. For virtual and in-person delivery, our expert trainers are available to answer questions and provide clarification during sessions.
Can I pay for the course in instalments or do I have to pay upfront?
We understand that budgeting for training is important. Please contact our team to discuss available payment options, including invoicing and payment terms for organisations.
Is there a deadline for completing the eLearning course?
Yes, learners have 12 months to complete the eLearning course, which provides plenty of flexibility to fit study around work and personal commitments.
What if I fail the assessment? Can I retake it?
You will have two opportunities to pass the multiple-choice assessment. If you do not succeed on your second attempt, our support team or your organisation’s administrator will advise you on the next steps for a re-sit.
For the practical assessments, your submissions will be reviewed by one of our qualified tutors, who will provide clear feedback and guidance to help you achieve a pass.
